A fox, a squirrel, and a hedgehog walk into a kitchen. It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it’s actually the beginning of a great project! There are three custom machine embroidery designs included: Henry the Hedgehog, Sally the Squirrel, and Francis the Fox, as well as – of course – full instructions for the adorable kitchen towels.
You’ll love the eye-popping colors and detailed embroidery, including those adorable French Knots on the mushrooms. Originally released as part of the Sew4Home Maker’s Club; this pattern set is now available exclusively in the S4H Etsy Shop. Our adorable Forest Friends designs are formatted to fit the front of a standard kitchen tea towel; they range in height from approximately 5″ to 6″.
The cute critters would also look lovely on other kitchen linens, the front of a tote bag, or even adorning a cozy sweatshirt or a child’s overall bib.
It’s a trio that would make a fabulous gift for birthdays, housewarmings or bridal showers.
As an ePattern, it includes instructions and photos to take you through each step of the construction. It does not include materials. Within your instructions will be a link that will take you to a special hidden page on Sew4Home.com from which you can download the custom Forest Friends embroidery files in any of seven popular embroidery formats: ART, EXP, JEF, JPX, PES VIP, AND VP3.
The pattern set provides detailed instructions for how to create the petite patchwork that adds a blast of color along the border of each towel. We used linen as our base fabric and explain how to professionally finish the edges with mini mitered corners. The skill level for the project is perfect for beginners with a knowledge of machine embroidery.
We understand you are providing the paper and ink to produce these instructions and so have included two flexible printing alternatives. The first file contains all the steps and all the full color instructional photos; it’s a great option for viewing on your computer or other digital device to fully understand the construction process. The second file is condensed to just the steps (no photos) to make printing even more efficient. Both files can be printed on either US Letter paper or A4 paper, using Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program).

Hi Anne. The fox is 19968 St, 152 mm x 124 mm (6″ x 4 7/8″), the hedgehog is 18170 St, 130 mm x 128 mm (5 1/8″ x 5″), the squirrel is 116464 St, 123 mm x 118 mm (4 7/8″ x 4 5/8″)
I’d love to see towel toppers for hanging these in the kitchen
Hi Cynthia – That would be a cute addition that you could easily add to our existing Etsy pattern. The options I’ve seen most often are crocheted, which is not something we feature here at S4H, but you could certainly add a loop and button in a matching linen to the towel itself or a quilting cotton that picked up one of the squares in the bottom band.

I love these critters and they’d tie in perfectly with my granddaughter’s room. It says above that it comes in “ART, EXP, JEF, JPX, PES VIP, AND VP3.” and I have no idea what that means but suspect it has something to do with computer/machine embroidery. Is there a pattern for hand embroidery for those of us without fancy sewing machines?

@linlal – So glad to hear you love our cute critter designs. Unfortunately, we do not have the skill set to produce patterns for hand embroidery. If you print out the template, you could use a transfer pencil to make an outline on your fabric. Then it would be a matter of applying crewelwork stitches to the design.

@Sewz4fun – Yes, the towel base fabric is a linen and the border is quilting cotton. We used mini charm squares, but you could cut your own squares from scratch as well.

I hope in the future these will be available in svg format too! Wouldn’t they be adorable cut in wool felt and appliqued onto a tote or a denim jacket (cut on the cricut maker!) Just an idea for future designs! Love these little animals!
