Toaster Cover

Thursday, 27 February 2014 1:00

One appliance that gets almost daily use in most kitchens is the trusty toaster. With all that hard work, it usually ends up looking a bit worse-for-wear. Maybe it's banged up around the edges, for sure there are crumbs aplenty, perhaps a there's a small scorched area from the Raisin Bread Affair of 2012. All in all, it isn't the prettiest member of the kitchen family. Keep it accessible yet under wraps with our trendy toaster cover. Our clever cozy features a pretty patchwork accent strip, bright piping all around, and an easy-tie handle so it's fast to whip it off or drop it back on. Now you see it... now you don't!

Patchwork Table Runner with Straight Line Quilting

Tuesday, 25 February 2014 1:00

Today we have a very tasty tutorial for our Kitchen Week: a quilted table runner with a pretty patchwork center that features four 'flying geese' blocks. Each block is made from one rectangle and two squares. When sewn, these pieces are transformed into a pattern of three triangles whose finished shape resembles the flying 'V' of migrating birds. The good thing is, the quilting version of flying geese is much, much quieter than the real version. Take it from someone who lives in the flight path of hundreds of Canadian geese. The runner finishes at just 16" wide x 30" long – almost more like a jumbo placemat. It's a great size for a smaller breakfast bar, and perfect as the center décor on a larger table.

One appliance that gets almost daily use in most kitchens is the trusty toaster. With all that hard work, it usually ends up looking a bit worse-for-wear. Maybe it's banged up around the edges, for sure there are crumbs aplenty, perhaps a small tattoo from a scorching accident. All in all, it isn't the prettiest member of the kitchen family. Keep it accessible yet under wraps with our trendy toaster cover. This is the final project in our Kitchen Confections series for Moda Fabrics, featuring the beautiful new Vintage Modern collection by Bonnie & Camille. Our clever cozy features a pretty patchwork accent strip, bright piping all around, and an easy-tie handle so it's fast to whip it off or drop it back on. Now you see it... now you don't!

Kitchen Confections in Moda's Vintage Modern: Matching Recipe Cards & Gift Tags

Tuesday, 22 May 2012 3:00

In today's world of instant Internet gratification, does anyone actually hand-write anything any more? Here at S4H, we'd like to think so. And, we'd like to think the handwritten recipe and the personalized gift tag will be two things with enough old-fashioned goodness to never completely go away. I know some of the most cherished items in my own 'save box' are a couple recipes written in my mother's beautiful cursive on dog-eared slips of paper and a simple gift tag made from wrapping paper scraps and stickers. In honor of these vintage traditions, we have two special downloads for you today as part of our Kitchen Confections series for Moda Fabrics: matching recipe cards and gift tags. Use them to create your own 'save box' memories.

Kitchen Confections in Moda's Vintage Modern: Pleated Apron

Monday, 21 May 2012 5:18

It's Week Two of our Kitchen Confections Series for Moda Fabrics! If you're a regular Sew4Home visitor, you know we love aprons. So of course there was no question we'd whip up a fab apron in Bonnie & Camille's Vintage Modern collection. We combined coordinating Bella Solids by Moda, matching rick rack, form-flattering waist pleats, and a quilted accent along the top of the bodice. Even the pockets have box pleat details, and by tilting them at an angle, they give the skirt a pretty pop of color.

Today we start a brand new series of beautiful kitchen tutorials in Bonnie & Camille's Vintage Modern collection for Moda Fabrics, which is hitting the fabric shelves right now, both in store and online! We call the series Kitchen Confections because each one is a delicious bite size project with plenty of sweet style. "But, aren't 'Vintage' and 'Modern' mutually exclusive?" You ask. (I always listen when you ask questions.) Not at all! It's a delightful blend of old and new. You get the prettiest patterns, reminiscent of old-fashioned goodness, but with a new twist that makes it all fresh and fun. This collection has six colorsways (Sky, Pebble, Cream, Candy Apple, Melon and Pear) with 40 quilting weight prints and 10 flannels, plus Fat Quarters, Fat Eighths, Layer Cakes, Charm Packs and Jelly Rolls. Wow! Thanks to Bonnie & Camille's great sense of style and design, it is mix-and-match heaven. In fact, there are so many fabrics to love, we ended up incorporating several patchwork techniques into our projects in order to allow us to inject as much variety as possible. Today, we kick off the series with a set of reversible placemats. Each one features unique fabric combinations for the front, back and binding; yet the patchwork feature band is the same on all, which ties the whole set together. We show you how to make a 'strata' so this common patchwork band is fast and easy.
