Snapshots Quilt-Along at Fat Quarter Shop Benefits St. Jude

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Yesterday was 1-15-15 – double fifteens is double-lucky and a perfect day for Fat Quarter Shop to kick off their newest Quilt-Along for a Cause: Snapshots. This year, not only will you end up with a beautiful quilt at the end of the QAL, you can also help support the amazing work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. FQS is encouraging all participating quilters to donate $5.00 for each month's pattern download. At the end of the series, Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will team up to match all the donations collected, up to $10,000! That means St. Jude could get as much as $20,000 to continue their crucial work to advance cures and work towards the prevention of catastrophic pediatric diseases.

The Snapshots quilt design is adorable! The FQS sample quilt features the new Daysail collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics. You'll create twelve novelty blocks, each one designed to capture a "snapshot" from the everyday moments that create happiness in our lives.

From riding a bike on a summer day to putting on a pot of tea to share with a friend, each detailed block is brimming with color – and it's all done with straight rotary piecing. As Kimberly Jolly from Fat Quarter Shop explains, "If you can make a half square triangle or a corner square, you can make this quilt!"

The block designs will post on the 15th of each month. And, Kimberly will be doing a accompanying video each month as well to help you along. The finishing and backing instructions will be posted on June 15th.

The January block, "Let Them Eat Cake," is a four tier celebration cake. It's available now, so you can start today! Download the pattern here. And the video is available here.  Don't forget to add your donation for St. Jude.

In addition, FQS is taking pre-orders for Quilt Kits and Backing Sets. The Quilt Kit contains the Daysail fabric for the 66.5" x 88.5" quilt top and binding, four buttons for the Cat and Dog blocks, plus a 220 yard spool of MK50-2600 courtesy of Aurifil. The specialty pieced backing set will use leftover pieces from the Quilt Kit and will include all instructions. There are a limited number of kits available, so reserve early. The kits will ship in February.

As you are sewing along, FQS would love to see pictures as your quilt develops, whether you are creating the quilt in Daysail or in another fabric of your choice. Share your images on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or on your own blog. Add the hashtag #fqssnapshots so everyone who's participating can enjoy each other's progress.

Each month, Bonnie and Camille will be sharing personal memories, stories, and something fun about each of their block designs.

It's a beautiful quilt for a beautiful cause. Read more about it on the FQS Jolly Jabber blog and watch a great video with Kimberly, Bonnie and Camille that tells why this is such an important QAL for them.

You have no idea how much this means to me. My daughter and I just returned from St. Jude 3 days ago! She goes every 6 months for check ups. We started when she was 6 months old. She just turned 8 a few months ago. March will be her 9 year anniversary at the hospital.

I spent an entire year teaching myself how to quilt so I could make a quilt and donate it when St. Jude and Hancock fabrics had a quilt contest. I am SO excited about this!! Last month my daughter used the sewing machine for the first time, I'm sure she would love to help make this quilt.
