When you focus on one thing, you get pretty darn good at it. One summer during childhood, my pal, Marilyn and I spent every day going around in circles. We were laser-focused on one thing: learning to ride a bike with no hands (ahhhh… life before smart phones, right?). Our dedication paid off and within a couple weeks, we rode away with arms held high, balanced and beaming. It’s the same with the new Janome Memory Craft 550E. It’s a stand-alone, embroidery-only machine that is very, very good at its one main focus: gorgeous embroidery.

Famous Janome stitch precision

If you’ve never seen Janome home embroidery in action, you need to stop by your local Janome dealer and take this new model for a spin. It’s mesmerizing to watch as the needle penetrates the fabric from 400 – 800 stitches per minute, bringing an intricate design to life in multiple colors right before your eyes. You might even have the same reaction I did on my bike: balanced on your sewing chair, arms held high, beaming.

The perfect companion for your sewing machine

If you’ve always wanted to add the capability to do embroidery but are happy with your existing sewing machine and/or not ready to step up to a top-of-the-line sewing and embroidery model, going with the Janome MC550E embroidery-only machine is perfect. You can incorporate embroidery into your own sewn garments and décor or embellish off-the-rack items for a custom look.

Larger embroidery field

The new RE36b hoop provides an embroidery field of 7.9″ x 14”;  it’s the largest embroidery area Janome has ever included on an embroidery-only machine! You can hoop bigger designs and reduce the number of re-hoopings so very large projects go faster.

Designs for days

Designs are easily imported into the MC550E through a USB or with a direct connection to your PC. Once in the MC550E, a design can be edited using the machine’s advanced on-screen functions. Navigation through all of these editing functions is naturally intuitive, and it’s all easier to see thanks to the large LCD color touch screen. There are 180 built-in designs, including floral alphabets, in-the-hoop monsters (so clever), even Sashiko and wedding designs. Add in six fonts, and the possibilities are really limitless.

Four embroidery hoops total plus extension table

In addition to the new 7.9” x 14”  RE36b hoop, the MC550E also comes with the SQ20b 7.9″ x 7.9” hoop, the RE20b 5.5″ x 7.9” hoop, and the SQ14b 5.5″ x 5.5”hoop. Plus the large extension table shown in the photos above also comes standard with the machine.

Easier than ever to hoop

Have you ever struggled to hoop your fabric – especially for a large design? The MC550E introduces newly redesigned, patent pending hoop clamps on the RE36b hoop. Created with two settings, you can insert the inner hoop and set the clamp at a half-way point, enabling you to make sure your fabric is in the correct position and perfectly smooth. Then easily press the two clamps all the way into place to completely stabilize your fabric.

The MC550E is shipping now to dealers across the country. Contact your favorite Janome dealer to check availability. The current MSRP is $3,999, so it’s quite affordable to add embroidery into the mix in your sewing room. Plus, right now – during National Sewing Month, authorized Janome America Dealers have some great special pricing offers as well as gift-with-purchase bundles.

We invite you to watch the short video below to see the new MC550E in action, look at all the standard accessories, see how easy it is to use the new hoop clamps, and get a glimpse of those super cute in-the-hoop monsters (perfect for Halloween coming up).

We’ll be experimenting with all the amazing built-in MC550E designs here at Sew4Home to come up with a new project or two that showcases the impressive embroidery! Our thanks to our friends at Janome America for sponsoring Sew4Home and allowing us to be an exclusive Janome studio. We love working with the best!

We do not sell machines – as mentioned above, you should visit a local dealer or check online in your area for the best, and most recent, deal. On the Janome.com website, the listed price is $3999, but most dealers offer great options, bundles, and sales.

I have a 550e and it got hung up on hoop, now my needle isn’t centered and hits the foot and breaks. I have turned off and back on but it didn’t help? Service repair is 3-4 hours away, hope I don’t have to go that route, any suggestions?

Hi Carla – I’m afraid that isn’t something we can’t troubleshoot on our end since we’ve not experienced that particular situation. You could try reaching out to Janome directly at custrel@janome-america.com to see if there are any “home adjustments” that can be done.

Hello – Sew4Home does not actually sell any machines. You’d need to reach out to someone in your local area that could provide pricing information for you. Here is a link to the Janome Global site; perhaps that will help you find local resources: https://www.janome.com/chooser/

I love everything about my 550E, a true work horse, except one little thing on the Editor program. The color editing screen or dialogue box is teeny tiny on my computer screen, with the icons for each color layer so small that I can hardly see which is the color area in order to make edits. I can’t seem to enlarge the screen at all. Is there a way to make the color change dialogue box larger?

Hello Mary, We no longer have the 550E in our stable of studio machines, but the editing program is similar to ones we do have. You should be able to look for a tab at the top of the screen that says View, and select from that drop down menu: Fit to Screen. If this doesn’t help, reach out to your local Janome dealer or to Janome America directly for additional help: custrel@janome_america.com

I love love my 550E however I’m plagued with puckering which I seldom had on my brother. I’ve tried all sorts of stabiliser/fabric combos, I’ve tried loosening my tension, I’ve tried having my fabric and stabiliser really tight in the hoops and a bit looser. All to no avail. Can anyone give me any settings that works for them because I have sat and wept at a beautiful embroidery snd puckered fabric.
I love the machine and I’d hate to sell snd go back to a brother but 4 months later I’m heading that way.

advice please?

Hi Bobbs – I’m so sorry to hear this – and it does sound like you are trying the right things to correct things. We’ve not experienced this issue, so we’re going to do a little more digging and will also reach out to our friends at Janome to see if they have any thoughts. Hang in there.

We put our heads together with our seamstress team embroidery expert, Michele. Here are her best strategies for pucker free embroidery. If you are still having trouble, we recommend reaching out directly to your Janome dealer for more suggestions. Always choose the smallest hoop that fits the design. That way there is less play of fabric in the hoop. Iron the fabric first, and if suitable, use starch. Michele’s favorite stabilizer is OESD Ultra Clean and Tear. A good alternative is Floriani Stitch and Wash. She always uses two layers. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together if at all possible.… Read more »

HI Liz,
I bought a Janome 550 E. I want to know if I can separately purchase frames that are 200mx280m (7.87″ x 11″). If so, where can I get it. I am in Ontario Canada.
Thanks

Hi Chandrika,
Your best option is to reach out directly to Janome Canada as we do not have specific information on which individual accessories are available where in Canada.

Hi Shirley – For an all-around amazing machine, check out the Janome Horizon Quilt Maker MC15000. It has so many features, I don’t have room to list them all here 🙂 – I’ve included a link below to Janome’s detailed info. If you would prefer to start out more economically, we love using the Skyline S9. Both links are below. A test drive at your local dealer is always the optimum way to determine what will be best for you!

I can’t seem to get my tension right. I just bought the Janome 550e. I started to mess with the bobbin tension which I don’t think I should have.. the bobbin thread is all shown on the top of my project. How do I resolve this?

Hi Kelly – For machine-specific issues like yours, it’s always best to reach out directly to your local dealer or Janome America. We’ll go through our records here and see if we can pull together any suggestions. If we can, we’ll post the notes here, but in the meantime, your dealer will likely have a more thorough answer.

And we’re back: the bobbin settings are changed on the screen of the machine. You’ll need to go into My Set and restore the settings to Default. If you have been playing with the bobbin race itself, it might mean a trip to the repair shop. The only other item our team could thing of: make sure the bobbin is placed with the thread coming off counter clockwise.

Hi Lisette – Congratulations on your purchase. I don’t know of a menu you can download and print from, but the last several pages of the manual show all the designs in color, which is a great reference.

I bought the Janome e550 a few months ago. When the bobbin gets low and it decides it is low on thread, it stops and will not restart until a refilled bobbin is installed, which wastes a lot of thread. Is there a way to change the low bobbin setting?

Hi Kathleen – yes you can make some adjustments. It’s hard to explain here in comments, but if you email us: info@sew4home.com — we can send you some screen captures to help walk you through the steps.

Hi Sally – We reached out to our 550E expert here at S4H, Michele Mishler for the answer below. For more details, or if this doesn’t quite address your issue, try reaching out directly to Janome America (custrel@janome-america.com) and/or your local dealer for more help. “Appliqué designs have placement outlines. The step-by-steps are usually found on the Color Chart. The first step is a placement outline. The appliqué fabric is positioned over the outline. The next step is a second outline which secures the appliqué fabric. The hoop is then removed from the machine and the appliqué fabric is trimmed… Read more »

I just got my Janome 550E and am still learning how to use it. I was embroidering a quilt label that had about 15 words. I use Premier Plus embroidery software and save it to a flash drive and stitch it out. My top thread broke a couple of times. I rethreaded the machine, backed up a few stitches and then started again. I even lowered the speed from 600 to 500. Any suggestions? I use very good thread.

Hi Robin – Trouble shooting specific machine issues long distance is really difficult. Below are some notes from the 550E expert on our S4H team. If you still have problems, it might be time to visit your local dealer as an in person inspection is often the best way to come up with a solution. — “I am not familiar with your software, so I will start my troubleshooting with what I do know. Are you using the proper stabilizer for your fabric? Are you using a quality quilter’s cotton for your label? I have the best success with a… Read more »

You might also try spraying your top thread spool with Sullivan’s Silicone Spray. Let the thread dry, then try stitching again. Sometimes that helps! Use the Pre-spun bobbins. That’s also helpful.

@Robin – I’m not sure if you’re asking about this particular model or in general. Check your manual for specific steps on a particular model, but in general what most folks do is: cut the threads and carefully remove the embroidery frame, replace the bobbin, and then move the needle back about 10 stitches and resume sewing.

Thank you. That makes sense. The manual doesn’t say anything about it nor the instruction video. I have the Janome 550E. My old viking had a button and the frame moved away to give room to change the bobbin and then returned back to the same position.

Love this, I’ve always wanted

Love this, I’ve always wanted an embroidery machine to create zipper bags and other crafty things. So many ideas. Sad this won’t be in my budget for a very long time unfortunately.
