Re-imagine & Renovate: Heart & Ruffle Apron

Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version

Some projects debut in such pretty fabric combinations, it can be a quite awhile before we come across another option we think can give the original a run for its money. But that's the whole idea behind our ongoing Re-imagine & Renovate series: to bring forward a favorite classic project for another look, in new fabric and with a new spin. Today we went from a bold damask in bright orange sherbet and candy pink to a delicate, lacy design in soft, chalky pastels. Recollection by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics is an eclectic collection with hints of artisanal techniques, like lacework, embroidery, stenciling, and tapestry.

This apron design was an instant favorite when it posted, and has continued to be discovered and shared across social media thanks to its fun, flirty styling.

With a heart-shaped bib and ruffles rimming all the edges, it would make a wonderful Valentines apron to whip up a few decadent desserts for your sweetie.

We found Recollection at Fabric.com in the Remembrose Dollies in Light we selected for the main print, and the Fairisle Hearts in Turkois, which we used for the ruffles, waistband and ties. The lining is a Moda Bella Broadcloth in Off White, also from Fabric.com.

Hawthorne Threads also has a good inventory of Recollection, including the knit and voile substrates.

The apron includes pretty diamond quilting on the bib. Remember to pick a closely matching thread and lengthen your stitch for the best look.

As with store-bought aprons, our design is meant to be one-size-fits-all. However, we realize you may still wish to make yours smaller or larger. The drawing below is shown as a reference. The waistband panel is approximately 20", the waist ties are each approximately 29" long, the neck ties are also each approximately 29" long, the skirt length is about 17" (from the bottom of the waistband) and the width is about 27" - both measurements include the ruffles, the bodice is about 11" wide (through the center) and 9¼" high (from the top of the waistband to the top point of the heart's curve).

Our new apron was made following the same construction steps as the original tutorial. As noted in the directions, fussy cutting is essential to the professional finish. Take the time to make sure the bib is a match to the skirt right through the waistband, and that the pocket blends into the skirt with only a ruffled top to give it away.
