Yes, we’ve entered the New Year, and yes, we’d like to think that means ol’ man winter is in our rear view mirror. But across the US, the cold weather is hanging on tighter than the waistband of your favorite jeans after all those holiday treats! This warm-you-up neck cowl will get you through the wicked weather in style. It’s like a mini scarf that buttons around your neck. Ours is smooth flannel on the outside and soft luxury fleece on the inside. Toasty times two!
This lovely apron pulls together three different techniques into one, fun project: our Everything Apron. It features embroidery, decorative stitching, and quilting. The base design of the apron comes from the Vintage Modern Pleated Apron from our Kitchen Confections Series. We added pretty new embellishments to give it an updated look with a little bit of everything for everyone.
Whether you make your own binding tape or purchase packaged bias tape, a cleanly bound edge is the perfect finish for so many projects. It’s definitely one of our favorites. However, getting a smooth and even edge along a skinny binding can be challenging. And we all know, the first thing that will keep you up at night is wavy topstitching. Well, there are probably other things keeping you up at night, but we’re kind of obsessed with straight seams. Hallelujah, there’s a new specialty presser foot from Janome that is letting us get a bit more shut eye: the Taping Guide Foot!
A zippered clutch is the go-everywhere kind of accessory that's a snap to make and a joy to give. This version has an chic vintage look thanks to delicate cross stitch embellishment. The embroidery design is one of the hundreds of built-in options on the Janome Horizon Memory Craft 15000. We reduced its size slightly for the best fit (very easy to do right on screen with the MC15000) and stitched it out in matte cotton thread against a rich black background. Coordinating quilting cottons in simple patterns complete the classic styling, adding soft color to the base of the clutch and the lining.
A straight line. It seems like the most basic thing you can do when sewing. But we’re amazed by the number of comments and questions we get from S4H visitors who want to know how to do it better, easier, and more consistently. We don’t have any magical powers to make our seams and topstitching look great. What we do know is using the right foot for the job is the real secret to a beautifully straight line. Because we’re an exclusive Janome studio, our specialty presser feet suggestions are from the Janome selection of accessories. Your machine manufacturer may have similar options for your make and model. In either situation, the recommendation is the same: investing in a specifically designed presser foot is well worth it. It makes the process less frustrating, you can finish a task quicker, and the results are more professional.
The name is due to its similarity to the wide, ornate straps musicians have always used to hold their guitars. By changing how the ends attach, they are now one of the trendiest accessories and a fun way to update any bag that uses a removable strap. We created ours to show off the decorative stitch package on our Janome Skyline S7. We love pretty stitching, and are always on the lookout for reasons to show it off. At a full 40” in length, this strap provides the perfect long, straight platform. To amp up the texture, we stitched with Aurifil 28wt 100% cotton thread in two solid colors and one variegated. The heavier weight of this gorgeous thread really makes the stitches pop and it worked great in both the top and bobbin, flowing through without a hitch.
I still remember the first sewing machine I bought with a full compliment of decorative stitches. I was in seventh heaven. It felt like the same unbridled choice as when you opened a fresh box of 64 crayons. Variety unleashed! But we often get so busy with the construction process, we forget about all those great stitches. Not today! Most machines have at least some decorative stitches, many of them, like our wonderful Janome studio machines, have hundreds! This pillow project gives you three different decorative stitching options to try, and we've included three template downloads to re-create our exact designs. There are random intersecting lines, which allow you to mix and match a variety of stitches. Our starburst showcases the option to program stitches, creating what appears to be individual dots. And finally, we give you the steps to stitch a spiral, using a padded satin stitch in variegated thread. It's all to encourage you to take advantage of your patiently-waiting decorative stitches... or maybe it's time to look for a new model with even more selection!
Did you ever have one of those cute little wind-up toys? It's so fun to watch as it tick-tock walks across the floor. But what happens when it comes to a wall? Can it turn left or right or even stop? No! It just keeps going, ka-wonking its little toy head against the wall over and over and over. It's a little like the decorative stitch. As long as you're going straight, all is well. The pattern is pretty, the thread is colorful, it's adding an amazing accent to your project. Then the corner approaches. If making a turn with a decorative stitch has you ka-wonking your own little head against the wall, we're here to help with three ways to take a turn for the better.
Little stuff? Zip it up! A zippered pouch is always handy, whether as part of a matched set as we’ve done here or on its own to hold whatever small necessities you need to carry. We offer a free pattern download that allows you to cut a perfect curve and gives you the needed markings for the darts at the bottom. These darts add a bit of extra fullness that allows the pouch to expand to hold more and larger items.
Handle with care! When you’re on-the-go and need your trusty laptop by your side, it’s important to keep it protected. The panels and pockets of our device case are layered with foam to create a soft yet study carrier. This folio is part of our Monogrammed Travel Trio. Make one or make them all. It’s a great way to travel smart and stylishly.
