A button with an extension on the back by which it is attached to the fabric. The shank is usually a metal be a loop. It creates a space between the button and the fabric. Coat buttons or buttons on other bulky fabric projects are often shank style to allow that extra space above the thick fabric to better allow the button to slip through the buttonhole.
