Catnip Heart Mice

Friday, 27 January 2017 1:00

We're cautious about toys for our cats, and so like to make our own catnip toys. This way, we can choose organic catnip and use up scraps of 100% cotton fabric. We made these little heart-shaped catnip mice out of charm pack squares, but they're a purrfect way to use any scraps of fabric. We're pretty sure any cats will love them since we had oodles of feline assistance and product testing during their construction.

Extra Easy Pony Tail Bolster Pillow

Thursday, 26 January 2017 1:00

This finished pillow may look complex, but the steps are... as the name promises: Extra Easy.  If you are learning to sew yourself or teaching someone else, this is a great first project. We spend extra time going over tools and techniques, and you'll find links to other articles that can move you further along the learning curve. In this one tutorial we explain topstitching, machine gathering, and how to make a skinny tie.

Monogrammed Travel Trio - The Zippered Pouch: Janome America

Little stuff? Zip it up! A zippered pouch is always handy, whether as part of a matched set as we’ve done here or on its own to hold whatever small necessities you need to carry. We offer a free pattern download that allows you to cut a perfect curve and gives you the needed markings for the darts at the bottom. These darts add a bit of extra fullness that allows the pouch to expand to hold more and larger items.

We combined the Janome Skyline S7 for sewing with the embroidery-only Janome Memory Craft 500E to add a stylish initial to each piece. Start off your set with this roomy, hold-everything tote. We chose two coordinating canvas prints by Sevenberry for Robert Kaufman Fabrics in tones of oatmeal and rose – a color combination that works year ‘round.

Sweet Hanging Sachets: ScrapBusters

Friday, 20 January 2017 1:00

These sweet little sachets take such a tiny bit of fabric, you could easily make a basket of them from just a couple eighth yard cuts of fabric. Or, dip into your scrap stash for a few of your favorite little leftovers. Our samples are filled with epsom salts scented with essential oil. Fast, easy and economical all around. And, of course, they are also pretty as a picture... especially with a decorative ribbon hanger. Is that the sweet smell of gift-giving success?!

How to Attach Babyville Plastic Snap Sets

Thursday, 19 January 2017 1:00

Snaps are one of our favorite closures. They're small yet sturdy, like a cute little Corgi dog. But there's not always a lot of variety from which to choose. You can usually find nickel or brass, and the Western favorite: pretty pearl head snaps, every once in awhile, maybe a rhinestone alternative. But that's where the decorative options usually ended. So when Babyville snaps hit the market a few years ago, their bright colors and cute cover designs were an instant hit. They were immediately snapped up for their decorative flair. We've used them on several Sew4Home projects, and now we have a full tutorial dedicated to showing you just how easy they are to insert.

This one tutorial gives you all the basics you need to create the first of what will likely be many, many zipper pouches. Even if the mere mention of a zipper gives you the heebie-jeebies, there’s no better way to calm those fears than to master the Classic Zipper Pouch. We added a custom metal fob, using a simple metal stamping kit, which is a fun extra that really personalizes the final look.

There are so many times you need two hands free (Look Ma... No hands!), and this clever little organizer is a great solution. It can slip onto a belt or clip onto a belt loop; making it perfect for urban walkers, Saturday antiquing adventures or just when you're trying to wrangle two toddlers down the block. Drop your smart phone in a pocket at the back – there's Velcro® at the very top to help keep it in place, and use the zippered front pocket to hold cash, change, credit cards or other necessities.

Bib and Burp Cloth Set

Monday, 16 January 2017 1:00

It’s the perfect “protection pair.” A bib for baby and a burp cloth for the person holding baby! And, who says keeping clean has to be boring? We used two coordinating designer cottons with a layer of soft cotton batting in between. It’s extremely washable and extremely beautiful - and just a wee bit more fashionable that slinging a cloth diaper or dish towel over your shoulder. Cute and clean – that is a perfect pair.
