While we didn't want to stray from tried and true functionality, we were itching for a fresh approach to traditional pastel decor. So, shopping we went, in search of vibrant, colorful fabric with adventuresome patterns and vivid hues to create a nursery compelling enough to inspire even non-sewers to make their first piece.

Our Fabulous Fabric: Patty Young's Andalucia

When we came across Patty Young's debut fabric collection, Andalucia, from Michael Miller Fabrics, we were all immediately taken with it. It simply felt perfect for a hip little girlie room. We really dug the hot pinks, reds, oranges and kiwi greens.

The collection is made up of two colorways, Earth and Fire, and they include a graphically sophisticated mix of ancient and modern designs -- Moorish Tile and Mod Blooms, Birdie Damask and Mod Dots. We picked from both for our fabric palette shown below. With some substitutions – we think Andalucia works for a boy's room as well. What do you think?

Stylish Baby Nursery: The Tutorials

Crib Bumpers in Two Cool Fabs: Let baby pick which side faces in. Flora or Jester? Will she dance among the flowers or have you ROFL? It’s never to early to make choices.

Bloomin’ Dust Ruffle: This dust ruffle in Fire Mod Blooms adds a load of pizazz to the room. We love the floor-sweeping length.

The Three Blankets: Three levels of ease: the papa blanket level has a binding trim with a plush Minky Dot Fleece back, the mama blanket level has a fun rick rack trim (also with a plush Minky Dot back), and the baby blanket level is just a cute stitch-of-your-choice trim with a soft flannel back.

Scalloped Rag Quilt: A rag quilt has nothing to do with rags; instead it’s named for its ragged edges that are simply exposed seam allowances that are snipped to form a soft fringe. One side features a patchwork of Andalucia fabrics, and the back is a sweet polka dot flannel.

Sunny Horizons Dresser Cloth/Crib Quilt: It’s a quilt, it’s a dresser cloth... OK, it was originally a quilt, but it looked so cute on the dresser we hired it for both jobs.

Sunny Horizons Twin Duvet Cover: Our nursery includes a twin bed which is fast becoming a nursery trend. It’s a great place to curl up for a cat nap while baby sleeps. The duvet cover is a spicy blend of horizontally pieced fabrics. It ties with adorable bows on the foot end.

Buttoned Up Triangles Pillow: Toss it on the twin bed and take a nap. Or prop it up and use the bed like a sofa. You can’t have too many pillows.

Pretty Patches Pillow: Whether it’s mom, dad, grandma or grandpa; somebody will spend a lot of time in the nursery, and this pretty pillow is oh-so lower-back friendly.

Super Simple Toss Pillows: Quick and so simple to make, but handy for mom to prop up an arm or her feet when she holds baby.

Flowery Curtains & Stripped Valance: When the sunlight filters through these dreamy curtains, the room feels like a meadow in summer. Whatever fabric you choose, before you sew, hang your fabric from your curtain rod for 24 hours to judge the lighting impact on the room.

Collapsible Storage Baskets: These are clever! Once you’ve made a few of these, you’ll want them in every room. Store diapers, washcloths, onesies, booties, anything you like.
