Click to Read MoreYour bedroom. It's your true "personal space." The place you start and end each day. In fact, you spend about a third of your life there. It should be a calming, comfortable place that relaxes you and makes you feel sheltered and safe. The colors you choose for your bedroom are crucial to creating this mood.

The color scheme in your bedroom is all about personal taste and working with shades and textures you love. However, some colors are more reliable than others when it comes to creating the most relaxing atmosphere.

Click to Enlarge Cool colors, such as blues, greens and browns, are the traditional colors of relaxation and serenity.

Blues

The color of the sky and water, blue is the leading symbol of restfulness. Blue is also commonly associated with trust and security, which translates into a relaxed feeling of contentment.

Greens

The color of nature; green is soothing, refreshing and rejuvenating. Green goes with almost any other color and offers a selection of hues that range from deep olives to wispy mints.

Browns

The earthiest of the earth tones, brown is sheltering, nurturing and calming. Deep, rich browns are your best choice, as darker colors create a cozy feeling. And remember, a little beige goes a long way.

This calming, natural colorĀ paletteĀ is a guide to creating the perfect environment for a good night's sleep. Of course, you can work with any colors you love, but keeping them muted and similar in tone will help bring about a room that is restful and comfortable to live with. To add contrast or interest, consider a change in texture rather than a jolting difference in color. For example, combine a smooth suede, a rippling, wide-wale corduroy and a cotton paisley in varying tones of chocolate brown. Or mix and match solids and patterns in complimentary blues, browns and greens for a beautiful collection of bed pillows. Choose colors wisely and you'll fashion a room that whispers rather than shouts its charms.
