Elegant Draperies

Drapery panels are one of the most dramatic window treatment options, especially when created with high quality decorator fabrics. The fabric has the weight to hang perfectly on a large window, and the choice of colors, designs and textures is unlimited.

Click to Enlarge The wonderful secret about draperies like these is that they are very simple to sew, with straight seams and flat construction. The trick is to find a large, flat surface, such as your dining room table, to help support the fabric while sewing. And as with everything you do – press as you go for the best results.

Sewing Tools You Need

Fabric and Other Supplies

  • McCall's pattern M5601, View D
  • Print fabric - yardage according to pattern
  • Lining fabric - yardage according to pattern

  • Rings for hanging draperies (optional)

Getting Started

At Your Sewing Machine

The panels pictured on the pattern are constructed with a rod pocket top. You may customize your drapery panels by using purchased rings. We have created loops from fabric for hanging the draperies.

  1. Cut each loop 3½" wide by 6". Stitch and turn right side out.
  2. Space the loops 4" apart and pin along the upper edge of the panels. Remember, your final top seam will be sewn right sides together, so you need to match the RAW edges of your formed loops with the raw edges of the panels. Your loops will be pointed down and will be sandwiched between printed fabric and the lining fabric.
  3. Click to EnlargeComplete the draperies according to the pattern instructions, and finish the top by sewing across the top of the panels with right sides together, using a ½" seam allowance. Turn the completed panels right side out. Your loops will now be pointing up and their raw edges will be encased in your top seam.

Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff ClassicStyle Fashion 1523 and the Brother NX-450.
