A leather pillow is like a leather jacket. It looks great with many different styles. With faux suede you get the look of leather without having to use a special needle or having to visit your local tanner.
The extra crossing seam on the front of the pillow with its accompanying topstitching gives it an authentic leather look. You can find faux suede at most fabric stores. And you don't need special tools to cut or sew it.
Sewing Tools You Need
Fabric and Other Supplies
- Simplicity pattern Simplicity 4108
- Faux suede for pillow
- Pillow form, 20"
- Pins and other notions
- All purpose thread
- Contrasting thread for topstitching
- Regular and topstitching sewing needles
- Scissors
- Iron
Getting Started
- Cut out Simplicity 4108 pattern piece #1.
- Fold it in half and then fold it in half again so that you end up with a square that's one quarter size of your pillow. Use this to cut out your four pieces for the pillow front. Remember to allow for a 1/2" seam allowance along each edge.
- Unfold the pattern and use it to cut out your back piece.
At Your Machine
- With the regular sewing needle in your machine, sew the four squares together to create the pillow front.
- Put in the topstitching needle and thread your machine with topstitching thread to contrast with your faux suede.
- Topstitch two lines of stitching along the two crossing seam lines about 1/4" from the seam. (See photo)
- Finish construction of your pillow, following the pattern instructions.
- Your faux suede pillow is done.
Hints and Tips
If you can't find topstitching thread in the color you want, use a double strand of regular thread. Using two spools, thread your machine and your needle. This will give you the same full look.
Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff expression 2038 and the Bernina bernette 92c.
