What a difference a button makes. Sew a big one in the middle of a simple pillow and it suddenly looks like it came out of an expensive catalog.


Cool buttons like the one in this pillow can be expensive, so just use a cheap clear button on the back side.

Sewing Tools You Need

Any Sewing Machine (we recommend the Janome Jem Platinum 720)

  • Pillow pattern Simplicity 4108
  • Tweed fabric for making the pillow cover
  • Pillow form, 20"
  • Decorative button for front
  • Plain button for back
  • All purpose sewing thread
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Notions according to pattern
  • Scissors
  • Iron

Getting Started

  1. From Simplicity 4108 choose pattern #10.
  2. Use this to cut out your front and back pillow pieces, following the pattern instructions.

At Your Sewing Machine

  1. Following the pattern instructions, sew the pillow cover.
  2. Insert your pillow form and slip stitch the cover closed.
  3. Sew on both buttons, opposite each other, at the same time.
  4. Enjoy.

Hints and Tips

You can almost always find single, fancy buttons at thrift stores and vintage stores.

Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff hobby 1122 and the Bernina bernette 82e.
