Stripes & Triangles Pillow in Aqua & Chocolate Print E-mail
Editor: Jacqueline Smerek

Click to Read MoreYou should never dress like this:  Stripes slashing across energetic prints in shades of aqua and chocolate with a faux leather accent.  But it sure makes a terrific accent pillow.

I took a basic rectangular pillow design and by piecing several different fabrics for the front made it something that will coordinate with many design elements in my room. This is an example of how some easy top-stitching gives a simple pillow a professionally finished look.

Fabric and Other Supplies

  • Simplicity pattern Simplicity 4108
  • Fabric for pillow
  • Faux suede for triangle
  • Pins and other notions
  • Piping
  • Pillow form, 12" x 22"
  • All purpose thread
  • Contrasting thread for topstitching
  • Regular and topstitching sewing needles
  • Scissors
  • Iron

Getting Started

  1. From Simplicity 4108 use pattern #10 for your pillow front. Determine which fabrics and shapes you want to use, laying them out on the pattern piece. Don't worry about making them exactly fit the pattern piece. You will sew them together and then cut out to pattern size.
  2. Cut out your fabric for the pillow back.
  3. Prepare any piping you will need. Follow the make-it-yourself instructions included with the pattern.

At Your Sewing Machine

  1. Sew your pillow front fabric pieces together. Cut out the joined fabric for your pillow front using pattern #10.
  2. Insert your topstitching needle and thread your machine with topstitching thread.
  3. Topstitch along each side of your faux suede piece about 1/2" from the edge.
  4. Change to a contrasting thread color and topstitch along the edges of your other fabric strips.
  5. Attach the piping according to the instructions.
  6. Complete the pillow, following the pattern instructions.
  7. Enjoy!

Hints and Tips

Before you do any topstitching on your pillow front, first see how the stitch will look on a scrap of the same fabric.

Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff quilt expression 2048 and the Bernina aurora 430.
