Throw pillows are supposed to add interest to your decorating. Making one with quilted fabric gives it extra dimension and coziness. If you can sew a straight line (and I know you can), you can make this puffy little pillow.
The key to remember here is that you'll cut your fabric for a rectangular shape but will follow the pattern instructions for the "large square quilted pillow." You can have your quilting stitches run straight, like a traditional quilt, as we did. Or if you want a modern geometric look, make them run diagonally.
Sewing Tools You Need
Fabric and Other Supplies
- Pillow pattern Simplicity 4108
- Fabric for making the pillow cover
- Quilt batting
- Muslin or other backing fabric
- Contrasting fabric for the piping
- All purpose thread in colors to contrast with the fabric
- Top stitching thread
- Notions according to pattern
- Pillow form in the size of your choice
- Piping to go around your pillow
- Hand sewing needle
- Scissors
- Iron
Getting Started
- From Simplicity Pattern #4108 use pattern #10 for Rectangular Pillow.
- Use this pattern piece for cutting out your fabric, muslin and batting.
- Follow the pattern directions for cutting out your piping.
At Your Sewing Machine
- Thread your machine with a top stitching thread that contrasts with your fabric. Top stitching thread is stronger than all purpose thread so there's less chance of it breaking and ruining your beautiful stitching lines.
- For quilting together the three layers of your pillow front, follow the Quilted Pillow instructions.
- Follow the pattern instructions for sewing on the piping, inserting your pillow form, and the final hand stitching.
- Now that you're good at this, make one for a friend.
Hints and Tips
Unless your machine has a walking foot, you'll need to pin the quilt layers together to keep them from shifting.
Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff Select 3.0 and the Bernina Aurora 440 QE.
