Cut velvet fabric, sometimes also called velvet burn-out, is created by removing loops of pile in a specific pattern. It is an absolutely beautiful effect and a favorite for home dec. This square pillow is so simple to sew and uses less than a yard of fabric, but it will add instant style to any room.
Experiment with your color choices on this pillow. Tone-on-tone, our choice here, is a elegant option. Choose a contrasting fringe for a bolder look.
Sewing Tools You Need
Fabric and Other Stuff
- 2/3 yard Cut Velvet Decorator fabric
- 2 yards Bullion Fringe
- All Purpose Thread in colors to match fabric
- 16" pillow form
At Your Sewing Machine
- Cut two 16" squares from Cut Velvet Decorator Fabric.
- Sew Bullion Fringe to one square, matching the woven edge of the fringe to the edge of the square, using a ½" seam allowance.
- Place the two squares right sides together, and stitch, following the previous line of stitching, and leaving an opening of 10" for turning the pillow. (Be careful not to catch the fringe as you sew.)
- Trim the corners and turn the pillow right sides out.
- Insert a 16" pillow form and hand sew the opening closed.
Hints and Tips
Explore the wide variety of decorator trims available. For the easiest-to-sew trim, look for flat trims with a woven edge that can be sewn without the need for a zipper or cording foot. Bullion fringe, like we've used here, is a good choice. With a fringe of twisted cords, it makes a dramatic finish for any decorating project.

Fancy loop trim is another easy-to-sew choice. This type of trim is purchased off the bolt with a line of chain stitch to control the loops. Once you've sewn the fringe in place, remove the chain stitch and fluff the loops.

Other machines suitable for this project include the Pfaff performance 2058 and the Brother NX-650Q.
