This is a very simple pillow, but the clever way the top is constructed from four, turned squares creates a dramatic pinwheel effect.
Add a tassel to each corner and you have a custom pillow that could sell for $40 - $80 in a retail shop. But you can make it for so much less, and it will be a true one-of-a-kind.
Sewing Tools You Need
Fabric and Other Stuff
- McCall's pattern M4629
- Assorted trims and tassels, yardage according to pattern
- All purpose thread in colors to match fabric
- Notions according to pattern
- 20", 16", or 14" pillow form
At Your Sewing Machine
Follow the instructions for pattern M4629, View G to create a simple square pillow. The stripes create the dramatic pattern. Each square is cut exactly the same, and as they are turned and sewn together, a pinwheel pattern emerges.
Hints and Tips
We scored the perfect striped fabric. It was the exactly the right color combination to coordinate with our other fabric choices, but if you are having trouble finding a good color match, consider creating your own striped fabric by sewing patterned ribbons to a solid colored fabric. The ribbons can be layered to create attractive patterns, and alternated with novelty ribbons. The result: a custom fabric that exactly reflects your decorating style.
Other machines suitable for this project include the Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 850 and the Singer 7469 Confidence.
