Add rows and rows of fun decorative stitching and bright novelty ribbon to store-bought sheets and you have custom bed linens that are simple yet sassy. We chose a nautical theme in bright blues and greens – a perfect contrast to the pale yellow of the sheets. Why count sheep when your little sailor can nod off counting tiny sail boats?!
Tools You Need
Fabric and Other Supplies
- Pillowcase and matching flat sheet in color to coordinate with the bedroom
- Polyester Embroidery thread in colors to coordinate with the pillowcase and sheet
- Ribbon:
- 1¼ yards 5/8" novelty ribbon for each standard pillow case
- 2 yards 5/8" novelty ribbon for twin flat sheet
- 2½ yards 5/8" novelty ribbon for full flat sheet
- 3 yards 5/8" novelty ribbon for queen flat sheet
- 3½ yards 5/8" novelty ribbon for king flat sheet
Getting Started
Press the linens before you start sewing. The directions are written using the pillowcases as examples. Repeat the same directions to create matching flat sheets.
At Your Sewing Machine
- With the water soluble fabric marker draw a line in the center of the hem parallel to the hemline of the pillow case.

- Sew the novelty ribbon centered on the drawn line.
- Cut two 5" x 22" strips of tear away stabilizer. Place the stabilizer on the wrong side of the pillow hem.
- Attach the satin stitch foot and select a decorative stitch. Sew a row of decorative stitches approximately ¼" from the ribbon edge.
- Select a different decorative stitch and sew ¼" from the opposite side of the ribbon.
- Continue in this manner for the entire width of the hem. If your machine has a lettering option, how much fun would it be to add the child’s name!
- Tip: Use Janome Border Guide foot to make perfectly straight rows of stitching without any marking.
- When all the stitching is complete remove the stabilizer and press the hem.
Other machines suitable for this project include the Viking Emerald 118, the Brother NX250 and the Bernina activa 230.
