Be Green

If you don't have $10,000 to tear out your ugly tub/shower combo, you can hide it very nicely behind a fabric shower curtain. This simple curtain was made from a classic toile fabric to coordinate with other items in the bathroom. It was designed to be extra tall to hide the tub from the floor on up. Simply hang your plastic shower liner behind it, sharing the same clips. You really can transform your whole bathroom with a couple of yards of fabric.

Sewing Tools You Need

Click to Enlarge Fabric and Other Supplies

  • Toile Fabric, 4 1/3 yards x 44" wide. You may need more if matching a pattern.
  • Ribbon, 3 yards
  • All Purpose Thread in colors to match fabric and ribbon
  • Bobbin Thread, matching
  • 2" curtain clips

Getting Started

  1. Cut the fabric in half along the long edge to yield two pieces that measure 2 1/6 yards. Pin the two pieces together to make one piece 88" w, lining up any fabric motifs as necessary.

At Your Sewing Machine

  1. Join the two pieces of fabric by sewing a seam down the center.
  2. Finish the seam edges with zigzag stitch (or serge). Iron flat.
  3. Make side seams. Fold fabric under, wrong sides together, ½" on each side and press. Fold under again to catch any raw edges. Stitch close to folded seam edge.
  4. Hem bottom by folding 3" wrong sides together, ironing and folding again to enclose raw edge. Sew close to folded seam edge.
  5. Make top hem the same way, turning under 2" once, ironing, then again.
  6. Place ribbon along stitching of top hem and pin in place.
  7. Stitch close to each ribbon edge using matching thread.
  8. Use curtain clips to hang shower curtain from a tension rod. Then attach a shower liner to the back with the same clips.

Other machines suitable for this project include the Singer 8780 Curvy, the Elna 2800, and the Pfaff hobby 1142.

Hi Curious Mind -- Buttonholes would work, but we like the snap on grommets even better -- we did a shower curtain with them and it worked GREAT.

Instead of curtain clips, I was thinking you could make holes with a button hole foot so that you can use any shower curtain ring or hook you prefer. I think the seam being moved away from the middle sounds like a good idea, too. The curtain you made looks great! I love toile! I bought the pink toile shower curtain from Target - I just saw this on your site. I would have made my own curtain had I seen this; I am going to make the towels!

Just a bit of advice: I've made a shower curtain before and it doesn't hang right if it's in 2 pieces (seam centered down the middle). It will hang much better if it's done in 3 pieces - the center piece larger than the other 2 side pieces.

Thanks for this. I am moving and want to decorate my appartment in some cute fabric. I am thinking black and white toile with hot pink fabric maybe if I can get the guys to agree that is.
