It just doesn't get any easier than this. Purchase a plain towel, then add your own decorative ribbon or ribbons.
Remember to use ribbon that is washable since you probably want to actually use these as towels. Wash and dry your purchased towels and wash and dry and iron your decorative ribbon.
Sewing Tools You Need:
Fabric and Other Stuff:
- Purchased towels
- Ribbon in coordinating color
- All-purpose thread to match ribbon
- Iron and ironing board
Before you start
- Cut the ribbon to the correct size for the width of the towel, leaving an extra ½" of ribbon so you can fold under the raw ribbon edges.
At Your Sewing Machine
- Fold the ends of the ribbon under ¼" and stitch. Make sure that your ribbon is the exact size as the width of the towel at this time. You may need to trim excess ribbon at this time. See Diagram 1.

- Based on the towel design, determine where you would like your ribbon to fall on the towel. Pin the ribbon in place on towel.
- Depending on the width of your ribbon, you will stitch down once through the center of the ribbon, or stitch twice, on each side of the ribbon. See Diagrams below. The Janome Ribbon/Sequin Foot is a great tool for making sure your ribbon is sewn evenly and accurately. It will accommodate ribbon up to 7mm in width

Other machines suitable for this project include the Brother PE-700, the Pfaff creative 2124 and the Singer Futura CE-250.
